Question Tempremental Computer

Well howdy!

It's been a while. But I guess you guys will be the best at figuring this out -

Windows XP pro -

the computer will start up and go to the safe mode choice menu

If I pick a safe mode choice it will bring up some text, go blank and go back to the safe mode choice menu.

If I pick normal or last known configuration it will go the Windows XP starting splash screen with loading bar (but doesn't make any sound like its actually starting) gets stuck and needs restarting.

I've tried unplugging the router and starting it. Turned it off at the plug.

I left it over night and in the morning it goes to the same screen - I choose normal and it works!

Wierd. Any ideas what it might be?

Muchas Gracias!

You probably have a dieing piece of hardware that overheated in your first scenario. Letting it cool off probably was why it booted normally later.

Laptop or Desktop? When was it new?

Have you cleaned out dust recently?

Did you install anything (software or hardware) before this problem happened?

Run chkdsk, for sure. Backup your data before you do anything else with it.

Check the capacitors on the motherboard. If the machine has been in use for awhile, some of them could be going bad. Look for expanding tops or even gunk oozing out of a really swolen top. Good luck!

Good call...

I always like to fix them personally, but sometimes it's just better to start from scratch.
