Installing Windows 98 or 95 on an old laptop

So I have this old laptop that was givin to me, and I want to install Windows 98 or 95 and a Linux OS too.

This is what I have....
Compaq Presario 1255 with a 360Mhz CPU, 160MB's of SDRAM memory, 36GB's on the hard drive, max resolution is 800 X 600 X 16M 24 bit color. Video memory is 128 bit 3D accelerated with 2MB vid. memory.

Okay, so I went on the internet and found a download for Windows 98 boot drive, I grabbed my CD of Windows 98, put both in the laptop and restarted it. All I got was a black screen and at the top it says, "Remove disks or other media. Press any key to restart."

So what did I do wrong? I did the same thing with Windows 95, and got the same thing. Am I doing anything wrong? I haven't done this in years, so I figured I am screwin' up someplace.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Did you set it to boot from the Floppy drive?

Have you seriously considered W2K? Those specs will run W2K very well, and if you haven't noticed, W2K is NEARLY as up to date, virus secure, and rock solid as XP, and yes, it runs well on terrible hardware.

Good Luck... old hardware can be a real challenge!

I've tried 95 and 98, and only get "grub" written in the top left of a black screen when it try's to boot. Then I tried 2000 and XP, everything loads, then gets stuck at "Starting to run Windows", or something like that. And it never does start, just a blue screen with writing at the bottom. Like when it's loading all the files.

The grub is from the Linux OS I had on it from before. I'll be putting in a Linux after I load the Windows OS.

Thanks but I gave it to a friend from work. He's got PartitionMagic, and he's going to get it running for me. So he thinks. LOL

I'm pretty sure he'll get it running. And he told me he'll write down everything he does, so I can learn some of this stuff.
