On-board sound missing?

G'day all,

Thankfully, its been a while since I've posted with a problem (For that fact its been a while since I've posted at all.. whoops)
For no apparent reason, my on-board sound seems to have gone AWOL, without warning either.

I left, the computer had Winamp going, and was happily playing music. Came back an hour later and no go. No warnings, no errors and no sound.
DxDiag reports no problems, but the on-board sound is no longer the default device (Thats been left to a modem, which are emulated and don't show in Device Manager)

Device Manager still shows the device, no question marks or warnings. I've tried restarting normally, though I'll try starting in safe mode, see if that can drag up anything.

The motherboard in question is an Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe, and truth be told, I've about had it with this bastard. For a replacement board, its given me the shits trying to work out its little issues.
I forsee an upgrade once the finances allow for it, and work settles down.

In the meantime though - anyone got any suggestions? Please?

Cheers,

Pottsie

Can you change the default sound device to the soundcard or not? I noticed that when I plugged in an Xbox360 controller that it became the default sound device on my PC (strangely enough), but I just swapped it back and it was happy.

Other than reinstalling the driver in device manager I can't think of anything at the moment.

Yeah, managed to get it playing through Winamp by 'forcing' it to use the onboard sound.
Checked settings and was able to set it as a default device again.

I think I'll write this one off, and just hope it doesn't show up again.

Cheers,

Pottsie

my bet is that a windows update has replaced realtek drivers with via drivers (or visa versa - all looks fine in device manager but it won't work

G'day,

Thanks for the replies people.
Kheldar - I'll have a look at that one, wouldn't surprise me.
Wiggo - I might've just got a dud one perhaps?

I've sold several, and most are still running well, however one ended up with a bizarre error where every now and again the PC wouldn't boot at all (black screen) but then magically would later. Played up more during times of high humidity or temperatures. The other finally popped several capacitors after being run 24/7 for 6 years.

that would probably be the make of the Bios, but probably not the manufacturer. The Make would be something like, Asus, Gigabyte, ECS, Foxcon etc. The model would look something like: GA-7N400, or 741GX-M for a few examples.
